An Introduction to Process Analyzers and Process Measurement Equipment

A process analyzer is an online instrument that measures the composition or quality of a process stream continuously, so the plant can control the process in real time instead of waiting for laboratory results. For refineries, gas plants and petrochemical complexes, analyzers are the difference between operating on data and operating on delay. Here is what the main analyzer families do and how to buy them well.

The main analyzer families

Process gas chromatographs (GC)

Separate a gas stream into its components and report composition and heating value — the backbone of natural gas custody transfer under API MPMS and ISO 10723, and of feedstock control in petrochemical units.

Oxygen and zirconia analyzers

Measure excess O2 in combustion flue gas for burner efficiency and safety, or trace oxygen in inerted or product streams.

Moisture and dew-point analyzers

Guard pipelines and cryogenic units against hydrate formation and corrosion by monitoring water content in gas — a critical measurement for every gas transmission operator.

H2S and total sulfur analyzers

Protect people, catalysts and product specifications in sour gas processing — central to sour gas plants on international projects worldwide.

Continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS)

Measure stack emissions (SO2, NOx, CO, particulates) for environmental compliance, increasingly mandated by regulators in importing markets worldwide.

The part buyers underestimate: sample conditioning

Most analyzer failures are sampling failures. A complete package includes the sample probe, transport line, filtration, pressure and temperature conditioning and stream switching — engineered for the process conditions and the hazardous-area classification (IEC 60079) of the installation.

How to specify an analyzer package

  • Stream composition, pressure, temperature and the components to be measured with required ranges.
  • Area classification and shelter or cabinet requirements.
  • Outputs and protocol (4-20 mA, Modbus, OPC) to your control system.
  • Spares, consumables and calibration gas scope for the first two years.

Rastemex sources analyzers and process measurement equipment with the sample systems and documentation as one quoted package — from qualified manufacturers, in writing. We are capable of shipping to all parts of the world, except countries under United States sanctions and destinations restricted by law.
